Some of you may remember us talking about Abraham and Saraí in an old blog post and in an old newsletter. If not, click here to read our March, 2016 newsletter where we first wrote about them. If you want the short version, they are two kids we first met in early 2016 when they were 8 and 9 years old. One Saturday morning we were hosting the first Bible Club we started when we encountered them selling fruit in the community. From there we invited them in, and they began to attend our weekly Bible Clubs. At some point after we turned the Bible Club over to leaders who are still active in leading Children's Ministry activities in the church, they stopped attending. On occasion we would see them in the street and talk to them, but we don't see them as often as we used to, and we probably haven't seen them more than once or twice in the past two years.
Imagine my surprise when we ran into them during a work project we were recently helping out with near where they live. I was so surprised to see them, and even more surprised to see how much they've grown. We shared with them a little bit. I asked what they were up to, and Abraham was on his way to buy bread at a nearby bakery. I stopped what I was doing and walked with him to the bakery. We shared a good conversation, and after greeting his sister in the street upon our return from the bakery it was back to work.
A few hours later they were leaving to walk to school. They do homework or work during the mornings and study in the afternoons. Just when they were passing by our project site the heavens opened and it started to pour. God definitely wanted to give us a chance to talk some more. It was at that moment that I opened the umbrella from the trunk of our car and gave them some shelter from the rain. They were already running late to school, and getting to school is a 25 minute walk for them. I offered them a ride to school. They didn't want to get in our car because they were wet and they didn't want to get our car seat wet. I told them that though I appreciated the sentiment they were being silly (okay, that's now actually what I said, haha). I was able to eventually convince them to accept the ride, and we were on our way. During the ride we were able to catch up a little more, and I was able to share with them a word of encouragement.
The best part of the story is that the rest of the week they continued to come by and say hello, and we were able to share a bunch of little 15-20 minute chats throughout the week. What a blessing it was to be able to catch up, to give them a hug, and to be able to provide them with encouragement as they enter new stages of life as teenagers. It is our plan to try to visit with them on a more regular basis and invite them to a nearby youth program we know of. Please pray for their salvation, for their family, and for us as we continue to visit with them. We know that it is no coincidence that we bumped into each other again after such a long time. We believe that God is at work in their hearts, and He wants us to be a part of it! Check out these before and after pictures from February, 2016 and present day.
